The Platform Isn’t the Problem. Here’s What Is.

July 31, 2026 · Stephon Rudd

Every six months someone declares that a platform is dead. LinkedIn is dying. Twitter is over. Facebook is only for old people. Instagram reach has collapsed. TikTok is going away.

And every time, the businesses that are actually generating clients from that platform keep generating clients from that platform.

The platform isn’t the problem. Here’s what is.

Most people approach social media as a broadcasting tool. They produce content, push it out, and wait for followers to become clients. This is the wrong model for almost every business that’s not already famous. Broadcasting works at scale. You need reach before broadcasting converts to revenue.

Before you have reach you need to be in conversations. Not broadcasting. Conversations.

The businesses generating clients from social media — regardless of platform — are overwhelmingly doing the same thing: finding the places where their ideal clients are having conversations and contributing genuinely valuable perspectives to those conversations. Not promotional pitches. Actual insight, real perspectives, useful responses.

This is how you build a reputation before you have an audience.

On LinkedIn it looks like commenting substantively on posts from people your ideal clients follow. Not “great post!” but a genuine addition to the conversation — a counterpoint, a supporting example, a question that extends the thinking. People see your comment, click your profile, and discover that you know what you’re talking about.

On Facebook it looks like showing up consistently in the groups where your ideal clients congregate and answering questions before you ever post your own content. When you’ve been the helpful person in the group for three months, everything you post gets more attention because you’ve established context.

On X it looks like joining threads on topics where your expertise is relevant and contributing perspectives that are different from what’s already been said.

The platform amplifies your behavior. Valuable participation gets amplified into reputation and following. Broadcast-only behavior gets amplified into being ignored.

Find where your ideal clients are having conversations. Join those conversations. Add genuine value. Do that consistently.

The platform will work.
