It’s more valuable than a click. More valuable than a forward. Infinitely more valuable than a like or a share.

A reply means a real person read your email, had a genuine response to it, and took the time to type it. That’s engagement that no metric can fully capture and no algorithm can fake.

So what gets replies?

The emails that consistently generate the highest reply rates share a set of characteristics that are almost exactly opposite to what most email marketing advice recommends.

They’re short. Not because brevity is inherently virtuous but because long emails require long reads and most inboxes don’t invite that kind of attention. The emails that get replied to most often are often under 300 words. They have one point. They make it and stop.

They ask a genuine question. Not a rhetorical question designed to set up a point you’re going to make anyway, but an actual question you genuinely want the answer to. The difference is felt by the reader immediately. A genuine question creates the feeling that a real person wants to know what you think. A rhetorical question creates the feeling that you’re being led somewhere.

The question is specific. “What’s your biggest marketing challenge?” is too broad to answer without significant thought. “What’s the one thing you’d fix about your email marketing if you could fix it tomorrow?” is specific enough to invite a quick, honest answer.

They’re personal in tone even when sent to a list. The best reply-generating emails sound like they were written to one specific person rather than broadcast to many. First person throughout. Direct address. The kind of language you’d use in a one-on-one message to someone you know.

They reveal something real about the sender. An honest admission. A genuine question you’re working through. A specific experience — success or failure — shared without spin. Vulnerability invites reciprocity. When someone shares something real, others are moved to share something real in return.

They don’t have a CTA competing with the reply invitation. If your email ends with “reply and tell me what you think” and also has three buttons linking to your products, your services, and your social media, the reply invitation gets diluted. One ask. In most reply-driving emails, the reply itself is the ask.

Write to generate conversations. Conversations become clients.

A reply is the most valuable response an email can generate. It’s more valuable than a click.
