They’re optimized for attention rather than for clients. And attention without conversion is just an expensive hobby.

Here’s how to build a content strategy that’s actually connected to client acquisition.

Start with the end in mind. What action do you want a content viewer to take that moves them toward becoming a client? It might be visiting your landing page, joining your email list, booking a call, or starting a conversation in your DMs. This action is the conversion event your content strategy is built around. Everything else — the topics, the formats, the posting schedule, the platform — should be optimized to create more of these conversion events, not more followers.

Map the awareness journey. Your potential clients don’t all start at the same place. Some are completely unaware of the problem you solve. Some know the problem exists but don’t know what solutions are available. Some know solutions exist but haven’t decided on one. Some are actively evaluating options. Your content needs to speak to all of these stages but in different proportions depending on where most of your audience currently sits.

For most service businesses just starting to build a content presence, the majority of your audience is in the early stages — problem-aware but not solution-aware. This means most of your content should be educating about the problem and its consequences rather than selling your specific solution. Content that earns attention by being genuinely useful to someone who has the problem — regardless of whether they ever buy from you — builds the kind of trust that converts at a fundamentally different rate than content that’s primarily promotional.

Create content pillars. Two to four recurring topic areas that you consistently return to. This serves two purposes: it trains your audience to know what to expect from you, and it trains the algorithm to understand who your content is for. Consistency of topic builds authority. Jumping from topic to topic keeps you perpetually unknown for anything specific.

Include a soft call to action in most pieces of content. Not a hard sell. Not a pushy pitch. A natural, low-friction invitation for the interested reader to take the next step. “If this resonates, I have a free resource that goes deeper — link in bio.” “If you want to talk about what this looks like for your specific situation, reply to this post.” The content warms them up. The soft CTA gives them somewhere to go.

Measure what matters. Track the conversion event, not the vanity metrics. How many people visited your landing page from content? How many joined your email list? How many booked calls? A post with 100 likes that generates 5 email subscribers is more valuable than a post with 1,000 likes that generates zero. Optimize for the metric that’s connected to revenue.

Most content strategies are built around vanity metrics — followers, likes, reach, impressions.
