The words. The thing that people actually read before they decide whether to click or keep scrolling.

Facebook’s algorithm is genuinely good at finding the right people. Give it a decent audience, let it run long enough to optimize, and it will find the people most likely to respond to your offer. The algorithm part of Facebook advertising is largely solved technology at this point.

What the algorithm cannot do is make a bad ad work.

If the copy doesn’t stop the scroll — if the first line doesn’t create enough curiosity or enough recognition or enough urgency to make someone pause their feed — none of the rest matters. The algorithm found the right person and the ad failed to engage them. That’s a copy problem, not a targeting problem.

So what makes Facebook ad copy work?

The first line is everything. On mobile — which is where the majority of Facebook traffic happens — users see one or two lines of text before a more button cuts the copy off. That first line has to do all the heavy lifting. It has to stop the scroll. It has to create a reason to keep reading.

The best first lines do one of three things. They name a specific pain point so precisely that the right reader feels called out. They make a counterintuitive claim that creates curiosity. Or they tell the beginning of a story that can’t be left unfinished.

What they never do is start with your company name, a generic benefit statement, or anything that sounds like an advertisement.

The second element that separates working ad copy from wasted spend is specificity. Vague ads generate vague results. The more specific your claim, your promise, and your call to action — the more the right people respond and the wrong people self-select out, which actually improves your cost per result.

“Get more clients” is vague. “Book three qualified discovery calls this week without running ads or cold outreach” is specific. The second one will outperform the first almost every time, even though — or because — it narrows the audience.

The third element is a single clear call to action. One thing. Not “learn more, sign up, follow us, and share this post.” One action. What do you want them to do right now? Make that the only option.

Fix the copy before you touch the targeting. Nine times out of ten that’s where the problem lives.

Every week someone tells me their Facebook ads aren’t working and asks what’s wrong with their targeting.
